Funding

Financial Support

Funding to help meet the financial needs of graduate students is drawn from one or more of the following internal and external funding sources: fellowships, teaching assistantships, graduate assistantships, scholarships and awards, and research assistantships. We expect this year’s funding package to be similar to what we offered students last year.

For full-time master’s students, York offered a basic funding package of approximately $10,000. In addition, we offered $12,000-$18,000 from university and departmental scholarships, for a total of $22,000-$28,000 for the academic year. No work was associated with this funding package. Since the MA is a one-year program, the funding is offered for one year only.

For full-time PhD students, York offered a basic funding package of approximately $22,500 guaranteed for 5 and 2/3 years, which includes TA work. In addition, we offered entrance scholarships for the first year in the $8,000-$13,000 range, bringing the total in that year to $30,500 to $35,500.

Funding availability for international graduate students is limited. Full-time international master’s students who receive funding support from York can expect a funding package of approximately $19,000 in their first year, met primarily through a university fellowship, plus $12,000-$18,000 from university and departmental scholarships, for a total of $31,000-$37,000. Full-time international PhD students who receive funding support from York can expect a basic funding package of approximately $33,500 in their first year, plus one-year entrance scholarships in the $8,000-$13,000 range, bringing the total in that year to $41,500-$46,500. Please note that international student admission is extremely competitive, as international students compete in a university wide arena, and that international student fees are higher than fees for domestic students.

Funding is contingent on continuous registration as a full-time student, continued satisfactory academic performance, and fulfillment of any funding-related employment obligations.

Eligible PhD students are expected to apply for SSHRC and OGS scholarships during their graduate studies, which would provide additional funding.

Note that students pay fees from their funding packages. Please find information about current fees on the Faculty of Graduate Studies — Student Finances page.
